Tropical Beach Wedding at Esterillos – Costa Rica 2016

This lovely young couple are from right here in Costa Rica, they chose the beautiful beach at Esterillos Este for their wedding celebrations. The Hotel Alma del Pacifico is perfect for weddings, as the hotel and gardens lead straight onto the Pacific Beach. The Alma del Pacifico is full of bright tropical colors, which is a wonderful backdrop for photos.
The wedding took place in the gardens and the reception party continued late into the night, ending with a beach bonfire.
Felicidades Ingrid and Roberto!

Pacific Coast Wedding in Costa Rica – Villa Caletas 2015

Villa Caletas’ amphitheater on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast is one of the most stunning and romantic places to get married. The amphitheater is set high on a steep hill overlooking the ocean, the hotel itself is beautiful with lots of terraces and garden.
The ceremony took place just before sunset and the light was perfect. After the ceremony the reception dinner took place in one of the hotels banquet rooms, the tables decorated with colorful flowers and pictures of the bride and groom. The wedding party and guests were all staying at the hotel, making everything thing so easy and enjoyable. Such and fun event and another great wedding by the team at Villa Caletas

Beautiful Church Wedding in San Joaquín de Flores Costa Rica – 2014

This lovely couple got married in San Joaquín de Flores, a beautiful little pueblo near Heredia in Costa Rica’s capital San Jose. The bride got ready at her parents house, just minutes from the church.  The church in San Joaquin is just gorgeous,  it was built about 1880. Interestingly, the church was built from rock carried from Cartago by ox cart, 87 km away!

I will cover the amazing reception in another blog post.

Wedding at Costa Verde – Manuel Antonio – Costa Rica 2014

The Costa Verde has three pools, and the pool where the wedding took place has a rock star has a view of the Pacific Ocean and the Manuel Antonio National Park. The ceremony took place  under a white  tent with a beautiful rose and crystal arch.

After the ceremony we went to the beach and got some fun group shots on the rocks. We even borrowed some surf boards to get a few surfy photos as the bride and groom are really LOVE surfing. The wedding party later headed to El Avion; Costa Verde’s Airplane Restaurant: for a reception party. We took some great photos in front of the plane and had lots of fun with sparklers…all I can say is – what a PURA VIDA Wedding!

Romantic Beach Wedding – Manuel Antonio – Costa Rica April 2014

How do I describe this beach wedding? ” Fun and romantic with a twist of vintage chique”…sounds about right! This fun-loving couple chose Playa Espadilla, Manuel Antonio’s famous beach for their wedding day; the aisle was decorated with whimsical bunches of soft pink roses. After the ceremony we took some photos on the beach, even climbed some trees and let off a beautiful wish lantern. Then the wedding party returned to their rental home, Casa Las Brisas; for a wonderful dinner on the roof top terrace….a perfect day!

Wedding at Los Sueños Resort – Costa Rica – March 2014

This wedding couple love fishing, so what better to have their wedding but at a marina in Costa Rica. The Los Sueños Resort and Marina in Herradura is on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, and has great sportfishing! Apart from the bride and groom the star of the show was their bulldog “Chancho” looking very suave in his bow-tie. The wedding took place on the lawn of the Los Sueños resort and then there was a reception dinner, dancing to a fantastic music group, a fabulously fun photo booth and to top it off fireworks. Did I mention the bride and groom like fishing? …check out the cake topper!

Beach Wedding and Trash the Dress – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica March 2014

A fun-loving couple wanted some unique photos for their wedding day…so how about a helicopter drone and some underwater photos?!
This gorgeous wedding was planned by Costa Verde and the ceremony was held at Playitas Beach. Playitas is the quieter end of the Manuel Antonio beach with great views looking towards the Manuel Antonio National Park. After an intimate ceremony we got some great photos on the beach and climbing in caves. I got the wedding couple to climb to the top of the big rock (seen on the first photo) and got some amazing aerial photos using my helicopter drone. Later, the wedding party went to El Avion one of Costa Verde’s restaurants for the reception dinner. The next day I met the newly married couple and we did a Trash the Dress session at the Costa Verde Pool…what fun!

The wedding took place under a wooden arch on the beach in front of YlangYlang. After the ceremony we took photos on the beach and then the wedding party returned to YlangYlang for the reception. Wedding at Ylang Ylang Beach Resort Montezuma Costa Rica January 2014

This whimsical romantic wedding took place at the Ylang Ylang Beach Resort last weekend. The bride and her two sisters looked stunning with flowers woven into in their long tresses.  The wedding took place under a wooden arch in Ylang Ylang’s beautiful gardens right next to the beach. The whole vibe of the wedding reminded me of Shakespeare’s a “Midsummer Night’s Dream”, specially when we started playing with the star projector (see second to last image). The last photo I took walking back along the beach from Ylang Ylang to the village in Montezuma. Looking out to the water, I saw the phosphorescence dancing in the waves. I magical end to a magically romantic wedding, all is missing is Puck on a surfboard!

This wedding was organized by the Ylang Ylang Beach Resort  in Montezuma, Costa Rica.

A Pacific Ocean sunset was the romantic backdrop for this wedding in Villa Caletas’ stunning amphitheater. The amphitheatre was decorated with purple rose petals that complimented the bridesmaids dresses. Manuel Antonio Wedding – Costa Rica December 2013

A surprise tropical rain shower during this outside ceremony did not dampen this wedding party! The ceremony began on the  ocean-view terrace of Villa Celaje, a luxury vacation home in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. About half way through the ceremony the heavens opened and we had to run for cover! The house has a large entertaining room with a deck overlooking the ocean, perfect for the rest of the wedding ceremony. Later the reception dinner and dancing took place at the house. The couple had really wanted some epic sunset photos, so the following day I took them to the Manuel Antonio beach and there was an incredible sunset! So they got to have a fabulous wedding AND have great relaxed sunset beach photos ….perfect!

Wedding at Copa de Arbol, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica November 2013

A wedding in the Osa Peninsula? A couple hours drive, followed by an hour boat ride along a jungle rivers and into Drakes Bay, sounds like an adventure, but that is only the beginning!
This wedding couple visited the Copa de Arbol Hotel on vacation and decided that this was where they had to get married surrounded by their closest friends and family. The Copa de Arbol Hotel is new luxury resort in an area renowned as the most untouched on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.  The hotel is not accessible by car, only a short boat ride from Drakes Bay or an hours hike along a coastal jungle trail.
At the end of the night,  I had beautiful moonlit hike back along the trail to my accommodation in Drakes Bay…it’s all part of the job of being a Photographer is Costa Rica, and going that extra mile….literally!

Location- Copa de Arbol, Caletas, Nr. Drakes Bay, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica

Hope you enjoy these photos I love the light in the beach portraits, just magical. I will be posting photos soon from another night hike I did with a local entomologist in Drake Bay.

This was my first same-sex ceremony and it could not have been a nicer couple, it was very relaxed – and I am really happy with how the photos came out. Montezuma is one of my favorite parts of this coast as it has a lot of exposed volcanic rock, which makes for some dramatic photos.

Wedding Photography: Reception Decorations

Mostly wedding photographs are of people who are celebrating their day, but other beautiful photographs may not contain people at all. These are not photographs that will go onto your wall, but remember to take photographs of the Decor, they will bring great memories in years to come.

These are a few examples of decor from weddings that I have photographed in Costa Rica. I just take the pictures the wedding planners do all the decoration! Wedding at Hotel Gaia Manuel Antonio Costa Rica February 2012

Another beautiful beach wedding in February. This elopement wedding ceremony took place on the Manuel Antonio beach with a gorgeous sunset. As it was just the couple we spent some time getting interesting photographs using the light, volcanic rocks, and even a monkey came to join the fun. I particularly like the photographs with the boat, these boats ferry people back and forth from the Manuel Antonio National Park, the captain kindly lent us his boat for a few minutes.

This wedding was organized by the Hotel Gaia in Manuel Antonio.

Wedding Photography: Remember the details

I love all aspects of wedding photography, but one of my favorites are the little details. So much thought and energy have gone into planning and preparing for this special day. From choosing flowers, dresses and shoes, to the manicure or curl of your hair. A wedding photographer’s job is to capture all aspects so that you will be able to treasure them all forever.

What style of wedding photography do YOU like?

There are quite a few different styles of wedding photography, what do you think would suit you?? ..What’s chic? But what would Great Auntie Vera like? What would you like hang on your wall? What will still look good on your mantle piece for your 40th wedding anniversary?!

So lets looks at Traditional Wedding Photography…

Traditional style wedding photography up to about 15 or 20 years ago WAS Wedding Photography, but in recent years it has gone a bit out of fashion. Most people think of traditional wedding photography as hours of tedious, group photographs, “The Bride and Groom with his family”, “the Bride and Groom with her family”, “the Bride and Groom with the ushers” etc.  Even though it is a bit out of fashion, don’t disregard it completely, traditional photography has stood the test of time and will always produce photos that you will look back at over the years.  Great Auntie Vera will expect this type of picture from your wedding and even through it is not fashionable at the moment these will still be the pictures you see hanging on walls. Plus you can get some fun group photos and it doesn’t have to take hours, just a few photos with you family and best friends.

How about Photo-journalistic Wedding Photography?

This is more in fashion at the moment. A photo-journalistic approach will give you a story of your wedding day, recording the events as they happen. There usually is not any formally posed pictures and the photographer stays in the background and photographs various parts of the day. At the end of the day you will have a photo album of what went on, which will always bring back happy memories. However, the disadvantage is that you are relying on the photographers instincts and they may miss something important to you. You may also regret the lack of formal images of friends and family in your album.

What is Contemporary Wedding Photography??

This type of photography uses beautiful backgrounds and perfect of interesting lighting to make the set and the bride and groom appear idealized – when done properly the results can be stunning! These will be the pictures that look like they have come from magazines. This type of photography makes you look FANTASTIC, but the downside is as fashions and style changes it will date quickly and it may end up looking a bit behind the times!

So what will work for you?

Well, it is ultimately up to you, but I would recommend a mix of all three types of wedding photography…The most important thing is to relax, enjoy and have fun with the photographs and they will always to special memories of you fabulous day!

To look at more of my wedding photography please go to my website www.weddingphotoscostarica.com and have a great 2012

John Williamson

a day in the life of a wedding photographer…

Many people that I talk to imagine that being a wedding photographer, particularly in the paradise of Costa Rica, is a piece of cake…arrive just before the ceremony, take photos, try and stay invisible…easy huh?

Well this is just not the case at all! Like every part of a wedding day, whether you are the bride, the groom, the wedding planner or the caterer, everything looks easy, but believe me…a lot of work has gone into making it look easy!

As the wedding photographer, I am normally in contact with the bride and groom months before they arrive in Costa Rica for their wedding, finding out about them and what sort of photographs they would like, answering questions about the local area, where to get the best photographs, generally planning for the best way to capture their wedding day.   As a photographer, there are certain very important rituals that I run through before the day and on the morning of the wedding…I need to check that all my cameras are working, batteries are fully charged, lenses are clean, check back up cameras, tripods, reflectors, flashes, check the back ups back up camera and take time to clear my head and give my self fully to the wedding…etc.

Then the wedding day begins….I typically take photos before the wedding of some of the preparations, like the bride finishing getting ready or having a pre-ceremony glass of champagne with her brides maids, or the groom nervously joking with the best man, these are the moments that begin to reveal the story of the day. During the ceremony I do my best to be invisible, whilst photographing the wedding from a variety of different angles that capture the eyes, the curve of a smile, or body language of two people brimming with emotion and love. Many people chose to get married on the beach in Costa Rica, which gives a stunning back drop and the amazing sunsets on the Pacific coast cast a magical light on the photos!

After the ceremony I normally take many photographs of the bride and groom and also group and family photos, I try and make them a bit fun and inventive by using the natural surrounding like the beach, palm trees, the waters edge, even monkeys from time to time.  My idea is that we all have fun with the photographs and in that way it is more enjoyable for everyone and as people relax their natural personalities and smiles come out. After the ceremony I often photograph the reception, and get details of the cake, flowers and toasts.  For larger weddings, I really enjoy when I am able to stay for the whole evening (till the music stops) and fully capture the whole day.  This allows me to get to know everyone better and be part of the celebration when people are relaxed and reveling in the after glow of the day.  Also, for better or for worse it really is fun to see all those crazy dance moves and wackiness going on late night and know friends and family will be enjoying those photos for years.

Often the bride and groom like to take more photos a couple days later, once the pressure is off and guests are not waiting to get stuck in to the champagne or cocktails. Then we can spend an hour or two getting some beautiful photographs either on the beach or with a sunset view.

Then the editing work begins, I post some of the best photos to my image gallery with in a week so that the couple can share the memories with all of those anxious friends and family who want to relive the day or were not there to participate. After that, I spend time editing the rest of the photos, which for each hour on site normally means 3-4 hours of editing. When I have finished editing and correcting the photographs, I send a high resolution DVDs of the wedding photographs to the bride and groom as soon as possible so they can print and share their photographs of their tropical wedding in Costa Rica with all their friends and family back home.  I always include a DVD slide show set to music, that reads like a book of the visual moments and progressions that make up the Bride and Groom’s story, this really does tug on some heart strings and brings you through the emotions of the day that go so quickly.   That is what I enjoy most, knowing that I have documented and been part of one of the most amazing days of people’s lives and given them something that will bring them back the instant they look at the photo and read into the smile or details within.

So as you can see the wedding day is not just one day at all!

I am John, a photographer in Costa Rica

Want to know more about being a photographer and life in Costa Rica? This blog is about my life, my name is John Williamson and I have been exploring, photographing and living in Costa Rica since 2000.

I first came to Costa Rica, via Virginia, to work as a photographer for Costa Rica Outward Bound, living the sort of experiences that one can normally only dream of – hiking my way through the jungle, jumping off waterfalls, and climbing volcanoes…and this was a job? (Well admittedly my home was a tent and the salary was pennies!). 10 years later I am certainly more established with my own home, photography business, two cats and a baby on the way. But I am still living the dream…I work with people on the happiest day of their lives, my photography backdrop is a beach or a wonderful sunset view and I live in paradise. What more could a man ask for?

My main photography areas are weddings portraits and architecture, though I am still a passionate nature photographer and am currently working on perfecting my underwater photography skills. In my spare time, when not photographing and editing, I love to travel, scuba dive, surf, and cook. Please follow my blog to hear more about my times in Costa Rica and life as a destination wedding photographer.
